Col. Edwin C. Catherwood

13th Missouri Cavalry, McNeil's Brigade

Edwin C. Catherwood

Edwin C. Catherwood was commissioned colonel of the 6th Missouri State Militia Cavalry on April 30, 1862. In September 1864, Catherwood was given a temporary assignment to organize the 13th Missouri Cavalry and so was in command of this regiment during Price’s 1864 Invasion of Missouri. On October 22, 1864 Catherwood formed his regiment in a column of fours and charged after the Confederates down the streets of Independence. Although the Confederates had strung a chain across the road before withdrawing west, an old woman had untied the chain just before the Union cavalry came charging by. Catherwood's men and horses avoided potentitally crippling injuries because of this woman's actions.
