Thomas C. Fletcher

Okay, Col. Thomas C. Fletcher did not fight at the Battle of Westport. But he was Brig. Gen. Thomas Ewing Jr.'s second in command during the Battle  of Pilot Knob (Fort Davidson). He was also the Republican candidate running for governor of Missouri at the time.

Born about 25 miles downriver from St. Louis in Herculaneum, Missouri, Thomas Clement Fletcher studied law, being admitted to the bar in 1857. Fletcher was appointed colonel of the 31st Missouri Infantry in October 1862. Fletcher resigned due to illness on June 16, 1864. In September 1864, Fletcher organized and was appointed colonel of the 47th Missouri Infantry. Fletcher also recruited men for the 50th Missouri Infantry. He resigned his commission on November 18, 1864, having been elected governor of Missouri on November 8, 1864.
