Born in New Hampshire, Andrew Jackson Huntoon relocated to Kansas Territory in 1856, settling in Williamsport, Shawnee County, in 1858. At the start of the civil war, Huntoon enlisted on July 16, 1861, as a private in Company A, 5th Kansas Cavalry. Huntoon was promoted to regimental surgeon on January 5, 1862 but was dismissed from the service on March 1, 1863, in Helena, Arkansas (no reason given for dismissal). After returning to Topeka, Kansas, Huntoon joined the 2d Kansas State Militia as captain of Company B on August 24, 1863. Huntoon was captured on October 22, 1864, at Mockbee Farm, was paroled at Newtonia, Missouri, on October 29, and arrived at home on November 12. Huntoon’s brother, Joel, was captain of Company H, 11th Kansas Cavalry. After the war, Huntoon returned to Topeka to practice medicine.
