
Born in Tennessee in 1830, William Ferguson Slemons was practicing law in Arkansas when the Civil War began. Slemons enlisted in the Confederate army and became colonel of the 2d Arkansas Cavalry (CSA). During Price's 1864 invasion of Missouri, Colonel Slemons was a brigade commander in Fagan's Division. After the war ended, Slemons returned to Arkansas to resume his law practice, serving three terms in Congress from 1875 to 1881.
