
Born in Pennsylvania, Irving W. Stanton relocated to Colorado in 1860 in search of gold. After a year or so, Stanton moved to Denver to take a position as deputy postmaster. While living in Laurette in the Colorado Territory, Stan-ton enlisted on October 8, 1863, as a private in Company C, 3d Colorado Infantry. Stanton was later promoted to 2d lieutenant in Companies D. When this regiment was consolidated with the 2d Colorado Infantry to form the 2d Colorado Cavalry, Stanton transferred into Company K as a 2d lieutenant. In November 1864, Stanton was promoted to 1st Lieutenant of Company L. After the war, Stanton went to Washington, D. C., and worked in the General Land Office. In 1866, Stanton returned to Colorado to work as registrar for the Central City Land Office. In 1871, Stanton went to Pueblo to set up the land office there.
