Colonel Edward F. Winslow sends the Third Battalion, Fourth Iowa Cavalry, commanded by Captain Edward W. Dee, down the hill into the ravine to anchor the Federal right. They faced little enemy opposition as they crossed to the other side of the Big Blue River.
