Price’s Retreat from Westport

Following the Confederate defeat during the Battle of Westport, the Army of Missouri under the command of Maj. Gen. Sterling Price headed south. Price needed to get his new recruits and wagon train full of plunder and war supplies safely back to Arkansas. This tour follows the Confederate retreat into Kansas and then back into Missouri, ending at Newtonia in southwestern Missouri. This is a fairly long tour covering a distance of about 200 miles from the first tour stop to last tour stop. For a shorter tour, the Mine Creek State Historic Site is about 60 miles south of the Kansas City Metro and well worth the trip.
